SSAB receives environmental permit to transform steel plant in Luleå
SSAB has received the necessary permit from the Land and Environmental Court in Umeå to build and operate a mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden, that will replace the current steel plant. The permit will enable a technology shift that will have significant positive effects on the environment and the climate. It will also allow SSAB to meet the high demand for our unique steels and to strengthen our future competitiveness.

SSAB and Fassi start partnership in fossil-free steel for cranes
SSAB and Italian crane manufacturer Fassi have reached an agreement for future deliveries of steel produced with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions. The deal includes steel produced from both iron ore and recycled scrap to be used in Fassi’s hydraulic and truck-mounted cranes.

HYBRIT: Large-scale storage of fossil-free hydrogen gas successfully proven
27 February 2025HYBRIT's pilot project for hydrogen gas storage has now been completed and reported to the Swedish Energy Agency. The results show that it is technically possible to store fossil-free hydrogen gas for the production of fossil-free iron and steel at an industrial scale. This can also reduce the variable operating costs of hydrogen production by up to 40 percent.
