Beveling is often a part of the weld preparation process where you reduce a square edge on an object to a sloping edge. It can also have an aesthetic role. Beveling can be managed through several different operations by 3D cutting with laser, plasma or oxy-fuel but can also be done with special handheld or stationary machines or robots, where the bevel is machined on the edge. If more complex shapes are demanded, machining is the method of choice, see example in picture. Which method you use depends on material, dimension, shape of the bevel and the tolerance demands.

There are many different types of beveled edges. The edges are described throughout the industry by the English letter the cut most closely resembles when looking at a cross-section. Common bevel types include V, X, Top Y, Bottom Y, and K.
